Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli to Attend the Informal Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change, Marrakesh, Morocco
Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli will be attending the Informal Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change (Pre-COP) on 18 October 2016 in Marrakesh. This meeting will serve as the preparatory meeting for the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-22) and related meetings[1] scheduled to take place also in Marrakesh in November. The implementation of the Paris Agreement that was adopted at the COP-21 in Paris in December 2015 will be a key focus of the meeting.
Singapore has been invited to participate in this meeting by the French President of COP-21 and CMP-11 Ségolène Royal and the Moroccan President-Designate of COP-22, CMP-12 and CMA-1 Salaheddine Mezouar.
Minister Masagos will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Climate Change Secretariat, Strategy Group, Prime Minister’s Office.
[1] These include the 12th Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP-12) and the 1st Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1). As at 10 October 2016, 75 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change accounting in total for 59 per cent of the total greenhouse gas emissions have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance or approval for the Paris Agreement. In accordance with Article 21, paragraph 1, of the Paris Agreement, the Agreement will enter into force on 4 November 2016.
